Microsoft unveils Windows 11

Microsoft unveiled its latest Windows operating system on June 24, saying that the experience will “bring you closer to the people and things you love.” Here are some features to get ready for.

Redesigned Start Menu

The new Start menu and Taskbar are displayed in the bottom center of the window, but can be easily moved back to the left corner. Microsoft also removed the menu’s live tile layout, opting for a customizable icon grid. This grid will even automatically list recommended apps and files based on your recent usage.

Snap Layouts

Snap layouts are a new tool that allow you to organize your open apps in one window, depending on screen size. This multi-tasking feature supports multiple monitors so you can access everything at once and maximize productivity.

Access Microsoft Teams from your Desktop

Microsoft built Teams directly into Windows 11, meaning you can communicate through text, chat, voice, or video all from the taskbar. Similar to Apple’s FaceTime, Windows 11 users can launch video calls with the press of a button.

New Microsoft Store

In collaboration with Amazon, the Microsoft Store will now include Android apps. Microsoft has also partnered with other companies to give users access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite, Zoom, and Disney Plus apps. And for developers who bring their own commerce engine, Microsoft’s chief product officer says they will be able to keep 100 percent of their revenue.

Windows Widgets

Part of Microsoft’s redesigned user interface is widgets for Windows. The new taskbar will feature a widget button that lets you see the latest news, weather, and more. You can make it full-screen or take a glance by sliding it from the left-hand side.

Xbox Game Pass Improvements

Game Pass will be integrated directly into Window’s 11 with the new update. Microsoft also announced their addition of DirectStorage API and auto high dynamic range (HDR) in games. You can also stream games from Microsoft’s cloud with xCloud.
