A list of 25 hacks to make you your most productive self

Once you learn these 25 Windows desktop tips, you won’t know how you lived without them! We’ve provided a list of tricks for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems. Be sure to try them out!

1.) PLACE WINDOWS SIDE BY SIDE

Press the Windows logo key ⊞ + right or left arrow to snap windows to the sides of your screen.

2.) ADD WIDGETS TO A BOARD

Select your avatar to open the widget settings. Under Add widget, select the Plus sign (+) next to any widget to add it to your board.

3.) CHAT WITH ONE CLICK

Since Microsoft Teams is built into Windows 11, you can chat or call right from your desktop. Just click the Chat icon on the taskbar!

4.) ORGANIZE OPEN APPS

Hover over a window’s maximize button OR press the Windows logo key ⊞ + Z. Then, choose from the displayed layout options.

5.) QUICK SEARCH

Search for people, email, files, or web results by pressing the Windows logo key ⊞ + S.

6.) MANAGE PASSWORDS W/ EDGE

Microsoft Edge can save passwords and automatically fill them in for you. To manage saved passwords, select Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Passwords.

7.) ACCESS CLIPBOARD HISTORY

Want to save items you’ve recently copied or cut? Just press the Windows logo key ⊞ + V.

8.) SWITCH BETWEEN OPEN WINDOWS

To switch from one window or app to another, press the Windows logo key ⊞+ Tab.

9.) TYPE WITH YOUR VOICE

To turn your voice into words in a text box, press the Windows logo key ⊞ + H, then select the microphone button in the pop-out menu.

10.) OPEN YOUR FILES QUICKLY

To open File Explorer, simply press the Windows logo key ⊞ + E.

11.) TURN ON NIGHT LIGHT MODE

Take the pressure off your eyes by selecting System > Display > Night Light.

12.) ENABLE FOCUS SESSIONS

Focus sessions allow for distraction-free work by removing messages and pop-up notifications. Start the Alarms & Clock app, select Get Started, and choose your desired amount of focus time.

13.) SHAKE AWAY UNWANTED TABS

Have a display full of Windows open that you don’t want anymore? Grab the top of the Window you want to keep and shake it to minimize the other Windows. Shake again to bring them back.

14.) NEARBY SHARING

Similar to Apple’s AirDrop, Nearby Sharing allows you to share files to a nearby device using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Turn it on by going into Settings > System > Shared Experiences.

15.) RECORD YOUR SCREEN WITH THE GAME BAR

Press the Windows logo key ⊞ + G to open the game bar and start recording. Once the game bar is open, use this shortcut to start and stop recording: Windows logo key ⊞ + Alt + R.

16.) INSTANTLY GO TO YOUR DESKTOP

To go straight to your desktop from open Windows or apps, press Windows logo key ⊞ + D.

17.) DYNAMIC LOCK

Want to protect your privacy while you walk away from your computer? Press the Windows logo key ⊞+ L.

18.) OPEN ITEMS ON THE TASKBAR

Use the keyboard shortcut: Windows logo key ⊞ + [Number key] to open that program. The number key corresponds to the position of the program on the taskbar. For example, Windows logo key ⊞ + 4 opens the fourth item on the taskbar.

19.) SHUT DOWN BACKGROUND APPS

Save your battery by controlling which apps run in the background. Go to Settings > Privacy > Background apps.

20.) OPEN EMOJIS AND SYMBOLS

Want a pop-up with emojis? Press the Windows logo key ⊞ + Period (.) or Semicolon (;) to access the library.

21.) CREATE A NEW VIRTUAL DESKTOP

To open a new virtual desktop, press the Windows logo key ⊞ + Ctrl + D. To switch between them, press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Left or Right arrow.

22.) OPEN THE SETTINGS APP

Jump to the Settings app with this shortcut: Windows logo key ⊞ + I.

23.) SCREENSHOT PART OF YOUR SCREEN

Most people know how to take a screenshot of your entire screen, but did you know you can also screenshot a selected area. Press the Windows logo key ⊞ + Shift + S to select the area.

24.) CYCLE THROUGH APPS ON TASKBAR

Go through each app on the Taskbar by pressing the Windows logo key ⊞+ T.

25.) OPEN THE START MENU

Press Ctrl + Esc to open the Start menu without clicking.
