Issues with Bin Tracking in Business Central

Last week I had an interesting issue come up where the “Bin Mandatory” flag had been set on a location card in Business Central. At the time it was enabled, there were some quantities of items not assigned to a bin. This created a problem when those quantities were being consumed.

The fix involves having everyone log out of Business Central and utilizing a Configuration Package. It worked flawlessly.  The steps are below:

***You must complete all these steps when there are NO OTHER users working in Business Central. We need to isolate the changes to only those that are made in these steps.***

  1. Using the configuration package, Export to Excel the data from table 14: Location.
  2. Open the resulting spreadsheet and for the MAIN location record, adjust the Bin Mandatory value from true to false.
  3. Save the changes to a NEW spreadsheet file—this is so that you will be able to easily get back to the old values which were originally exported.
  4. Go back to the Configuration Package Card page that you used to export. When the Location table record is highlighted, click Table – Fields.
  5. In the Edit – Config. Package Fields page, locate the Bin Mandatory field, and unmark the Validate Field checkbox.
  6. Close out of the Edit – Config. Package Fields page.
  7. When table 14: Location is highlighted, click Excel – Import from Excel. Point to the newly saved spreadsheet from step #4 above.
  8. After the data is imported, click Functions – Apply Data.
  9. When the data changes are successfully applied, in Business Central process Transfer Orders or Item Journals to move or remove the quantities for the items/lots in question out of the MAIN location.
  10. Verify that the quantities and lots are adjusted as desired.
  11. Go back to the Configuration Package Card page that you used to export/import.
  12. When table 14: Location is highlighted, click Excel – Import from Excel. Point to the originally exported spreadsheet from step #2 above.
  13. After the data is imported, click Functions – Apply Data.
